During this week throughout the readings I noted things that I was working on during work that I could utilize what we were learning. After reading Chapter 2 of our reading a light bulb went on that Blogging could be a great way to keep the principal of our building connected with the parents and students on a daily basis. Though we have our monthly newsletter, a blog would allow for immediate updates. I am going to present this to the building administrators as I am the webpage updater for our school. This would be a great opportunity to meet the needs of the community. The example I am going to use is a website that explains the 11 advantages for using blogs in schools http://www.slideshare.net/frankcalberg/11-advantages-of-using-a-blog-for-teaching.
Hopefully with this new offer to our school community, individuals will enjoy the latest news on a daily basis vs. a monthly basis.
Mary - I love your blog format! Also, thanks for sharing the slideshow that you'll be showing to your administrators. I, too, agree that having the principals check the blog is a better way of communicating...it gives them the opportunity to comment on what's going on in the school. Our elementary newsletter often contains several examples of student work. Think how excited a student would be to see that their principal has commented on their individual work through the blog!
ReplyDeleteI think it would be great for administrators to blog. However, knowing my student population (ELL), not many of those parents would necessarily be able to read it. I know there are cool (and free) translation options for Spanish at least, that would provide the gist, but Hmong students would be left out.
ReplyDeleteI also thought it would be cool to create a class blog and have the principal or vice principal on it as a user. Even if they don't comment much, but lurk a bit, it would let the students know that more than just their classmates are reading their stuff.
Not to mention, if you blog and have a fellow teacher somewhere else, you could have blogging buddies. How cool would that be?
Mary,
ReplyDeleteYour blog is beautiful! It's motivating me to update mine! Anyway, you must have read my mind about talking to the administrators about blogging. I actually wrote about that in the forum this week, as my principal and I have recently had many discussions about getting the technology in our school up-to-date so our kids will be competitive. Although I did a lot of thinking about blogging with my students this week, I would really like to start a blog for our staff members to communicate. We do a TON of e-mailing back and forth about every little thing, when we could blog and it would be so much faster!
