Interesting enough I just had a conversation with a teacher in our school about to much homework being assigned to students. The teacher felt similar to what the book states, "the amount of homework assigned to students should be different from elementary to high school". I am in a middle school, however, have a daughter at the high school and the middle level teachers feel there is way to much homework assigned up at the high school by several teachers. I found this interesting because most of her homework seems to be "busy" work. Just give work to the students to keep them out of trouble. Very rare does she have homework that requires much research and use of the computer. I do not see that she is absorbing information by just "busy" work where I know if there was more technology incorporated into the homework, she would get the assignments more.
If the work was more involving technology she would enjoy doing it much more and it wouldn't seem so much like "homework".
Mary,
ReplyDeleteI like how you brought up the issue of making homework less like homework by integrating what kids like to do...use technology! I think if more teachers could find ways to keep kids learning and growing with their education through technology there would be a lot let resistance to going home and doing homework. It might actually become fun or at least not such a drag!
My son is finding that 7th grade homework is way more involved than in any of his other previous grades. When he got stuck a few times, I showed him how to use the internet to find examples that will help him answer what he needs. He now does this on his own and can work more independently to help himself. I wish that the homework he was assigned automatically had the web element because I think he would find the internet is more useful than just playing Facebook games.
